Habitat and Recreation Lands Coordinating Group Home Page This page last updated Sept. 1, 2009
In 2007, the Legislature created the Habitat and Recreation Lands Coordinating Group and charged it with coordinating how state agencies acquire and dispose of habitat and recreation lands.
The Legislature formed the Lands group in response to the 2005 Toward a Coordination Strategy for Habitat and Recreation land Acquisitions in Washington State; Final Report which concluded that there was room to improve interagency coordination. The Legislature asked the Lands group to coordinate through improved communication, documentation, reporting, transparency, and planning.
The Lands Group includes state natural resource agency representatives and other key interest groups. The Recreation and Conservation Office provides staff support. The Lands Group created several workgroups to implement legislative tasks. A
progress report shows recent workgroup developments.
On July 16, 2009 the Lands Group hosted the first Annual State Land Acquisition Coordinating Forum. The Forum is a chance for state agencies to discuss which lands they have been funded to acquire and why in order to identify opportunities for coordinating land acquisitions and disposals. Participating agencies gave presentations on potential acquisitions and disposals for the 2009-2011 biennium. Participants identified several opportunities to coordinate land acquisitions. The Lands Group will help facilitate coordination. The Lands group meets quarterly. Its work will culminate in a final report and recommendations to the Legislature in January 2012. The group expires July 31, 2012.
