All Grantees: Complying with Governor's Cultural Resources Executive Order

In November 2005, Gov. Christine Gregoire signed Executive Order 05-05, Archeological and Cultural Resources. The order is intended to protect archeological and cultural resources that may be impacted by state-funded projects. The Recreation and Conservation Funding Board (RCFB), serving as lead agency, is required to send information about projects to the Department of Archeology and Historic Preservation as well as consult with affected tribes. If the project has the potential to affect resources, grantees may be required to conduct a professional survey or perform mitigation actions. The review will be done as early in the application process as possible. RCFB will work with grant applicants to meet this requirement.

For more information about the executive order, visit the Governor's Web site at http://www.dahp.wa.gov/pages/EnvironmentalReview/Laws.htm or contact your grants manager.

For additional information on what is included in a cultural resources survey and a listing of businesses that do that kind of work, visit Department of Archeology and Historic Preservation's Web site at http://www.dahp.wa.gov/. The section on Reporting Standards under Quick Links offers guidance on elements to include in a cultural resources survey; the Environmental Review section hosts a listing of consultants for your information.
