Athletic Facilities Grants

There are several grant programs targeted at building and renovating outdoor athletic facilities and ball fields. These grants provide funding to:

• Buy land
• Develop new facilities
• Renovate existing facilities

Grant Program:  Land and Water Conservation Fund – Provides funding to buy or develop public outdoor recreation areas and facilities.
Distinguishing Characteristic:  Program supports both acquisition and development of active and passive recreation areas and conservation lands. Projects that improve existing sites vs. new, and meet statewide recreation priorities score better. Public use is required. April 1, 2010-May 1, 2010	Land acquisition Development Renovation	Local agencies*	50 percent. At least 10 percent of the total project cost must be from a non-state, non-federal source.	$500,000

Grant Program:  Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program Local Parks Category – Provides funding to acquire, develop, or renovate outdoor recreation facilities.
Distinguishing Characteristic:  Program is for neighborhood, community, and regional parks with a primary focus on upland recreation and outdoor swimming pools. At least 50 percent of funding must be for acquisition projects. A comprehensive plan is required.
April 1, 2010-May 1, 2010	Land acquisition Development Renovation	Local agencies*	50 percent. At least 10 percent of the total project cost must be from a non-state, non-federal source.	Acquisition:  $1 million Development:  $500,000 Renovation:  $500,000 Combination (acquisition with development or renovation):  $1 million, not more than $500,000 may be for development.

Grant Program:  Youth Athletic Facilities – Provides funding to buy, build, renovate, and maintain athletic facilities.
Distinguishing Characteristic:  Program is for projects that develop or renovate competitive athletic facilities. Emphasis placed on facilities that serve both youth and adults.

* Local agencies means a city, county, town, federally recognized Native American tribe, special purpose district, port district, or other political subdivision of the state providing services to less than the entire state if legally authorized to acquire and develop public open space, habitat, farmlands, riparian habitat, or recreation facilities.
